Blog 10: Oil Contamination, Overheating & Glazing
Oil contamination is a leading cause of wet friction disc failure. The oil within a wet clutch or brake does more than provide lubrication. It also plays a critical role in cooling the friction interface and maintaining consistent friction performance.
Dirt, water, metal particles, degraded oil and incorrect fluids can compromise both the friction material and mating steel plates. As oil condition deteriorates, its ability to protect and cool the friction system can be reduced, increasing the risk of overheating, glazing, delamination and premature component failure.
How Contamination Causes Failure
• Dirt and metal particles can abrade or polish friction surfaces, affecting surface condition and reducing consistent friction performance. Circulating debris can also contribute to accelerated wear throughout the clutch or brake system.
• Water contamination can be absorbed into porous friction material. At elevated operating temperatures, this moisture can turn to steam, creating internal pressure within the lining and potentially causing blistering, delamination or, in severe cases, bursting of the friction material.
• Absorbed moisture can also cause the friction material to swell, changing individual disc thickness and overall clutch pack height. This can affect operating clearances and piston travel, potentially resulting in drag, incomplete disengagement or abnormal clutch operation.
• Burnt or degraded oil becomes less effective at supporting the required operating conditions at the friction interface. Excessive temperature can degrade the fibres and resin within the friction material, producing a smooth, hardened surface commonly known as glazing.
• Once glazing occurs, the friction material may no longer generate the required coefficient of friction. The resulting slippage creates additional heat, which causes further material degradation and creates a self-accelerating cycle of thermal damage.
• Contamination, degraded oil and excessive heat can also reduce the effective porosity of the friction material, restricting oil flow through and across the friction surface and further reducing its ability to manage thermal load.
Common Warning Signs
Early indicators of oil-related wet clutch or brake problems can include:
• Increased clutch or brake slippage
• Glazed or smeared friction surfaces
• Localised hot spots or discolouration on steel plates
• A burnt oil odour
• Brake or clutch squeal
• Drag or incomplete disengagement
• Reduced or inconsistent clutch or braking performance
These symptoms should not be considered in isolation. They can indicate a wider lubrication, cooling, contamination or operating problem within the system.
Why It Matters
Oil contamination rarely affects the friction discs alone. Debris, excessive heat and degraded lubricant can also damage steel plates, bearings, gears and seals, potentially turning a friction pack failure into a significantly larger and more costly driveline repair.
Maintaining the correct oil specification, controlling contamination and following OEM-recommended fluid change and maintenance intervals are therefore essential to achieving reliable friction performance and maximising component life.
When investigating a failed wet clutch or brake, oil condition should always form part of the root-cause analysis. A damaged friction disc may be the result of a wider system problem rather than the original cause of failure.
