Blog 3: Why Tribology Matters: How it influences Friction Discs, Bearings and Duo Cone Seals in Heavy Equipment
Overview
Tribology plays a crucial role in keeping mining and earthmoving machines running smoothly. It is the science of friction, wear and lubrication: essentially how surfaces behave when they slide, roll, or rotate against one another. It is the foundation for how components like friction discs, bearings, and duo cone seals are designed, tested and selected for use in heavy-duty applications.

Friction Discs
In wet clutch and brake systems, friction discs are responsible for transferring torque, enabling smooth gear shifts, and providing controlled braking. Tribology allows us to develop materials, such as our P206 hybrid friction paper, P208C Carbon friction paper and Carbon Plus Composite in order to maintain a stable coefficient of friction, even under extreme heat and pressure. Groove design and surface finish are critical too, as they impact oil flow, heat dissipation, and wear rates.
Poor tribological matching can result in glazing, chatter, and accelerated failure. That’s why our discs undergo rigorous dyno testing to ensure they perform under high-energy duty cycles.
Bearings
Bearings may seem simple, but they are highly sensitive components. Whether it’s a tapered roller bearing in a final drive or similar, they are affected by factors like surface roughness, lubricant viscosity, and contact pressure. Tribology helps us understand how different load patterns and contaminants (like dust or water ingress in mining environments) affect bearing life. Selecting the right cup and cone pairing, ensuring proper preload and using compatible fluids are all decisions driven by tribological science.
Duo Cone Seals
These seals are often the last line of defence against dirt, water and oil leaks in final drives. They operate under constant rotation and pressure, making them highly susceptible to wear. Tribology plays a key role in:
- Selecting compatible elastomers and metals
- Designing the contact geometry for optimal sealing
- Minimising face wear and frictional heat
