Blog 4: Steel Mating Plates: Modern Rebuild Practices That Prevent Clutch Failure
As technology evolves, there are always new opportunities to refine rebuild methods, particularly in how we care for and prepare steel clutch plates.
Why steel surface resurfacing can have issues:
It used to be standard practice to sandblast, buff, or tumble steel clutch plates to restore their surface. That worked well for older sintered or asbestos-based friction materials, which needed rough surfaces for bedding-in.
Modern wet clutch systems, however, use advanced paper, carbon, and graphite friction materials: much softer and more precise. These systems rely on smooth, consistent surfaces and minimal break-in.
The problem with rough surfaces:
- Rough plates can damage friction materials before proper bedding-in occurs.
- Most clutch wear happens in the first 100 to 200 cycles — making surface finish critical.
- Resurfacing often leaves finishes over 2.5μm Ra (100μ”), while OEM specs are 0.5μm Ra (20μ”) or better.
- The result: glazing, high wear, and even premature failure.
Steel plates are precision manufactured with a polished or rotary ground finish.
Reading the Colours: signs of overheating
Steel develops distinct oxidation colours when exposed to elevated temperatures. These tempering colours serve as visual indicators of the temperature history of a component. Recognising these hues can help identify plates that may have been compromised by heat:
- Pale Yellow – 221°C
- Light Yellow – 227°C
- Pale Straw – 232°C
- Straw Yellow – 238°C
- Deep Straw – 243°C
- Dark Yellow – 249°C
- Yellow Brown – 254°C
- Brown Yellow – 260°C
- Spotted Red-Brown – 266°C
- Brown Purple – 271°C
- Light Purple – 277°C
- Purple – 282°C
- Full Purple – 288°C
- Blue – 293°C
- Dark Blue – 299°C
If you observe these colours, it is a strong indication that the plate has been overheated and will no longer meet the necessary tolerances for flatness, hardness, or performance. Such plates should be inspected thoroughly and replaced.
The myth of the glossy plate
There’s a common belief that shiny plates mean less grip. In reality, modern friction materials are engineered to deliver consistent performance across OEM-spec surface finishes. A smooth surface doesn’t reduce performance — it protects the system.
Handling and Pre-Assembly Best Practices
To protect both steel and friction components, always follow proper handling protocols:
Handling
- Never touch bare steel with your hands. Skin oils cause corrosion and contamination.
- Use gloves with the correct PPE rating to handle all steel plates.
Pre-Assembly Inspection
- Check for deep scratches, cracks, or dents – any severe surface damage is unacceptable.
- Inspect the inner and outer edges – no chipped, broken, or misshapen gear profiles, teeth, or lugs.
- If contaminated, clean using the application-specific oil: never solvent cleaners.
- Don’t stack plates after removing from packaging, this can cause edge chipping.
- Check every steel plate for surface condition and flatness using accepted methods before reuse.
In Summary
Unless your OEM specifies reuse criteria, always replace steel mating plates during rebuilds.
Even if they appear serviceable, unseen stress can lead to:
- Cracked teeth or lugs
- Dished or coned plates
- Premature clutch failure
Modern clutches demand precision:
- Avoid aggressive resurfacing.
- Maintain flatness.
- Replace overheated plates.
